Empyreans: Children of the Gods

Empyreans occupy a unique place among the most powerful beings in Dungeons & Dragons. They are not gods, yet neither are they ordinary mortals blessed with divine magic. They are the direct descendants of deities, inheriting immense strength and supernatural gifts from parents whose influence shapes entire planes of existence.

Despite their origins, empyreans are not bound to follow the expectations placed upon them. Every empyrean possesses free will. A child born to a benevolent celestial deity may reject its parent's ideals and pursue a darker path, while the offspring of a fiendish god may spend a lifetime seeking redemption and distancing itself from its family's cruel legacy.

This freedom creates remarkable variety among these towering beings. Celestial empyreans often become protectors, champions, or wandering heroes dedicated to proving themselves worthy of their divine heritage. Many serve their parents directly, carrying out sacred missions across the planes or aiding mortals whose causes align with their patron's beliefs.

Fiendish empyreans frequently follow a far more destructive path. Some attempt to build kingdoms that rival those of their divine parents, while others gather armies of monsters and cultists in pursuit of conquest. A few seek to escape the influence of their fiendish lineage altogether, creating fascinating stories centered on identity, redemption, and destiny.

Regardless of their allegiance, every empyrean exists beneath the immense shadow cast by divine expectations. Their greatest struggle is often determining whether they will define themselves by their lineage or by the choices they make.

Divine Power Made Manifest

Few creatures can rival an empyrean in raw physical and magical power. Standing as a Challenge Rating 23 monster, an empyrean possesses the strength, resilience, and versatility expected of a being born from divine blood.

Its Sacred Weapon attacks are devastating enough to stagger even legendary heroes. Every strike delivers tremendous force damage while threatening to stun its target. Victims face a difficult choice: endure the stunning effect or willingly suffer even greater damage to remain standing. This unique mechanic creates interesting tactical decisions that few monsters force upon players.

At range, the empyrean is equally terrifying. Divine Ray allows it to strike enemies from an astonishing distance of 600 feet, dealing either radiant or necrotic damage depending on the creature's nature. Whether serving celestial or fiendish powers, the empyrean can unleash divine energy capable of punishing enemies long before they reach melee combat.

Beyond its offensive abilities, the empyrean demonstrates remarkable versatility through powerful spellcasting. Greater Restoration enables it to remove debilitating effects from allies, while Plane Shift and Commune reinforce its role as a being closely connected to the divine realms. Combined with Magic Resistance and multiple uses of Legendary Resistance, the empyrean is exceptionally difficult to overcome through magical means alone.

Its legendary actions further reinforce its role as both a warrior and leader. Bolster strengthens nearby allies while improving their chances of success, Shockwave of Glory scatters enemies across the battlefield, and Smite ensures the empyrean continues applying pressure even outside its own turn.

Taken together, these abilities create a creature that feels every bit like the child of a god.

More Than Divine Blood

Although their statistics are impressive, an empyrean's greatest strength as a storytelling tool lies in the choices it makes.

Unlike many legendary monsters driven by instinct or overwhelming evil, empyreans are individuals with personalities, ambitions, doubts, and beliefs. Their immense power gives them the ability to shape kingdoms, inspire religions, or plunge entire regions into chaos depending on the values they embrace.

A celestial empyrean might recruit adventurers to help prevent a divine catastrophe, judge rulers accused of corruption, or defend sacred sites from fiendish invasion. Conversely, a fiendish empyrean could become the central antagonist of an epic campaign, leading armies in an attempt to establish itself as a living god worthy of worship.

Their relationships with their divine parents also provide fertile ground for storytelling. Some desperately seek approval from the gods who created them. Others reject their heritage entirely, believing destiny should never outweigh personal choice. Even the most powerful empyrean must eventually answer a question no amount of divine strength can solve: who do I choose to become?

That theme is what makes empyreans so memorable. They remind us that power alone does not determine greatness. Character does.

Whether encountered as a noble protector, a tragic exile, or an ambitious tyrant, an empyrean represents one of the grandest expressions of divine potential in Dungeons & Dragons. Their stories are not merely about strength inherited from the gods. They are about what happens when someone powerful enough to reshape the world decides exactly what kind of world they wish to create.
