Ez d'Avenir's story begins not with heroism but with betrayal.
As a child, she lived among the Radanavich family, criminals who masqueraded as Vistani while preying upon innocent travelers. Their crimes eventually crossed paths with Rudolph van Richten when they kidnapped his son, Erasmus, and sold the young man to the vampire Baron Metus. During the short time Ez knew Erasmus, he described a family built upon kindness, trust, and love, concepts that were entirely foreign to her own upbringing.
When Rudolph van Richten finally hunted down those responsible, Ez did nothing to stop him. Instead, it marked the beginning of a life that would take her far from the cruelty she had always known.
After leaving the Radanaviches behind, Ez joined a true Vistani caravan and adopted the surname d'Avenir. Although she traveled widely, she never found the sense of belonging she had hoped for. Eventually she sought out Rudolph van Richten himself. Their first meeting was cautious, but over time the legendary monster hunter accepted her as his student.
Under Van Richten's guidance, Ez mastered the knowledge needed to confront vampires, ghosts, fiends, and countless other supernatural horrors. She even reunited with Erasmus, whose spirit remained in the world after death, strengthening her bond with the family she had once believed she could never have.
Years of dangerous hunts came at a heavy cost. Ez lost companions, missed opportunities, and sacrificed part of her leg during her battles against darkness. Yet none of those hardships weakened her resolve. Instead, they reinforced the conviction that innocent people deserved someone willing to stand between them and the nightmares lurking beyond the firelight.
A Hunter Prepared for Every Monster
Ez d'Avenir excels because she combines martial skill, magical knowledge, and battlefield leadership into a single adaptable package. Unlike many monster hunters who specialize against only one type of enemy, Ez prepares herself for whatever threat lies ahead.
In combat, she can shift seamlessly between melee and ranged attacks. Hunter's Blade channels radiant energy through precise strikes, making it particularly effective against undead and fiends, while Fiery Bolt allows her to punish dangerous enemies from a considerable distance. This flexibility makes her equally dangerous whether confronting a vampire in a forgotten crypt or pursuing monsters across open wilderness.
Her spellcasting reflects years of practical experience rather than academic study. Light and Mage Hand provide reliable utility, while powerful spells such as Dispel Evil and Good, Magic Circle, and Lightning Bolt equip her to confront many of Ravenloft's deadliest supernatural threats.
Ez's greatest strength, however, lies in supporting those who fight beside her. Bolster Allies grants companions either increased offensive potential or protection against several of the damage types most commonly inflicted by undead and fiends. Inspiring Rally allows an entire group to reposition safely during desperate battles, helping allies escape deadly situations without provoking attacks.
Perhaps her most devastating ability is Curse of the All Seeing Eye. By exploiting a creature's weaknesses, Ez can make an enemy vulnerable to a chosen damage type, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of her entire party. Against powerful monsters, this ability can completely shift the momentum of an encounter.
Every aspect of her abilities reinforces the same idea. Ez is not simply a skilled warrior. She is an experienced hunter who studies her prey before striking.
The Heart of a Hero
What makes Ez d'Avenir such a beloved character is not her combat ability but her humanity.
